The BBO is open to students in post-16 education studying at school or college. The competition consisted of one, 55-minute multiple choice paper. In 2025 18,533 students from 1053 schools participated.
In addition to encouraging and rewarding pupils in their studies, the BBO is the first stage in selecting a team to represent the UK at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO).
Well done to Jo Jo He (Silver) Ava Armstrong (Bronze) and Anna Neal (Bronze), Mischa Hampshire (Bronze), Una McGowan (Commended), Laksha Singh (Commended) and Emma Meenan, Amparo Miralles Bravo, Ella Matthews, and Kaci Bracken Irvine who all participated.
