Yesterday was a brilliant day for St. Dominic’s, as our u16 camogs became the first Ulster school to lift the Corn Úna, and the first Belfast school to win an All Ireland Camogie title at any grade.
The girls started well, with Amy Gault slotting over a free. Amelie Annett followed up with a well taken point, and Kildare replied with two points from their full forward, to leave it two points a piece after fifteen minutes. A brilliant run from Aoife Fitzsimons lead to Ríonach MacElhatton raising the green flag, however Kildare replied with 1.02 unanswered, all from their full forward. A point exchanged at each end left it 1.03 to 1.05 at half time.
Kildare started brighter and scored a point straight from the throw in, however St Dominic’s replied with four unanswered points to take the lead for the first time in 30 minutes. Following a Kildare point, Erin Kelly netted to give us an uncomfortable three point lead with 5 minutes to go.
Kildare put the pressure on, and the last few minutes were spent entirely in our half. A couple of brilliant saves from Aoibhinn Austin, coupled with relentless hard work from our backs meant we ran out one point winners, 2.07-1.09.
A special mention to Amelie Annett, who covered every blade of grass on the pitch, and was deservedly recognised as the player of the match.
We could not be prouder of each and every girl within the panel, who have worked so hard since September. Whether it was morning training, late evenings after school or challenge matches on a Saturday morning, nothing was too much to ask of the girls and it is wonderful to see their hard work rewarded.
